1. Is everyone safe? An injury, or a car stuck in a lane with traffic moving past it, means 911 comes before us.
2. Where is the vehicle? A street and cross street, a lot and its level, or a highway, your direction and the last exit. I-295 northbound past Exit 6 for Forest Avenue is a spot a driver can find; somewhere on the highway downtown is not.
3. What is it? The year, make and model, plus anything unusual: a lift kit, a lowered body, dual rear wheels, a trailer, AWD or an electric drivetrain.
4. What is it doing? Whether it starts, rolls, steers and goes into neutral, and whether you have the key.
5. Where should it go? Your mechanic, a dealer, your home or another town.

Then we quote one total for the job, tell you which truck is coming and give you an honest idea of the wait. If the total does not work for you, you owe us nothing.

When the tow truck gets there

The driver parks so the truck shields the car from traffic where the road allows, turns on the lights and checks the vehicle against what you told us, then confirms the drop-off and the total with you before anything is hooked up. If you cannot wait with the car, mention it when you phone and we will agree on where the key will be left.

I-295. Once the highway crosses the Fore River, downtown is reached from Exits 4 through 8, among them Exit 5 for Congress Street, 6 for Forest Avenue, 7 for Franklin Street and 8 for Washington Avenue on Tukey's Bridge. Exit 3 in South Portland serves Westbrook Street and the Jetport, and Exit 10 in Falmouth is Bucknam Road.

The Maine Turnpike (I-95). The exits around Portland are 42 in Scarborough, 44 (the I-295 connector), 45 in South Portland (the Maine Mall exit), 46 for the Jetport, 47 at Rand Road, 48 at Riverside Street and Larrabee Road, and 52 and 53 in Falmouth.

The bridges. The Casco Bay Bridge (Route 77) and the Veterans Memorial Bridge (US 1) cross the Fore River to South Portland. The Casco Bay Bridge is a drawbridge that raised for ships 630 times in 2019, by the Portland Press Herald's count, and traffic waits while it is up. Martin's Point Bridge carries US 1 over the Presumpscot River to Falmouth Foreside.

The Jetport (PWM). If the car is dead after a trip, tell us whether it sits in the five-story garage beside the terminal, and on which color level, or in the Green Lot, the Pink Lot or Park-N-Jet.

The islands. Peaks, Little Diamond, Great Diamond, Cliff and Cushing islands are part of Portland, linked to the city by Casco Bay Lines ferries, so an island job is planned around the boats. Call before you plan a crossing.

The City says towed cars now go to private tow company lots, since it no longer has an impound lot of its own. If police or a parking officer ordered the tow, the officer had to tell the police dispatcher where the car is being stored (City Code Sec. 28-102(a)), so start with the police non-emergency line. From a store or office lot, read the tow-away signs, which in Portland must explain how to locate a towed vehicle (Sec. 28-123(m)).

These Portland, Maine towing rules come from Chapter 28 of the City Code and cover tows done without the owner's consent, private-lot tows included:

• Before it is hooked up, you can move the car and owe no towing fee. Once it is hooked, but before the truck starts to leave, you can pay the driver a $40 drop fee in cash and the car must be released (Sec. 28-122).
• The caps in Sec. 28-122, as revised June 1, 2026: $150 for a non-accident tow, $175 for an accident tow and $50 a day for storage, which starts 24 hours after the tow.
• At the lot, bring satisfactory proof of your right to the car (Sec. 28-103); the operator must release it within one hour of your request (Sec. 28-123(o)). After a police tow, the car stays put until unpaid parking fines and City charges are settled (Sec. 28-127).
• Your belongings: under Maine law (29-A M.R.S. §1861) the operator may keep the car until reasonable charges are paid, but may not hold the registered owner's personal effects, such as medications, clothing, mail and child car seats.
